  • Short history of the building

One of the most beautiful and imposing buildings in Sângeorgiu de Pădure is the two-story castle built in neo-Baroque style belonging to the Rhédey family. The castle was built in 17th century by count Rhédey László, but its today's form is due to a renovation completed in 1809. The old castle had tall towers, large decorated saloons. The owner of the old castle was the Kornis Family and since 1647 it entered the ownership of Count Rhédey. The castle was donated by Bethlen Gábor to an ancestor of László Rhédey, namely János Rhédey. The later switched his properties and riches with his brother in Hungary, István Rhédey, in order to be able to settle down in the castle of Sângeorgiu de Pădure. During the renovation works, the flat ceiling of the hallway and the upper saloon were painted in Neo-baroque style by template model and the rest of the saloons were painted in white. The ground floor saloons have the ceiling in the form of a semi cylindrical vault. The basement, the ground and first floor gather a total of 13 rooms positioned around a wooden staircase decorated on baroque style. The connection to the attic was made by placing a wooden, narrow, snail staircase in the thick wall. In 1885, the Rhédey property was sold to a nobleman Schuller Rudolf up to 1935 when it is bought by the state. Nationalized in 1947, the building was occupied by administrative offices and since 1960 by the local Elementary School. Today, it hosts the local offices of the National Touristic Information and Promotion Center and exhibition halls.
