  • Short history of the building

The present castle was built at the beginning of the 15th century, by the noble Losonczi family. Over the next 150 years, the estate changed several owners. In 1610 the estate was owned by Gábor Bethlen, the Prince of Transylvania, and later it became the property of I. Rákóczi György. In the year of 1648, II. György Rákóczi gave the property consisting of five villages to János Kemény, the chief advisor of the prince. In the next three centuries, the owner of the estate was the Kemény family. In 1926, the last baron who bore the name of his ancestor, János Kemény, invited 28 of the most prominent literary personalities of the time, thus Helikon Transylvanian Cultural Community was founded in the Castle of Brâncovenești. From then on, for twenty years, the castle of Brâncovenești became the center of literary meetings. The castle was not damaged during the Second World War, however when the family left the estate, the local population plundered the estate. After 1949, the castle became home for children with severe mental disabilities. The descendants of the Kemény family succeeded in regaining the castle.
